Between October 14 and October 15, BASIS recorded a two-basis-point step up in Daily Reward Rate across all four stAssets followed within twenty-four hours by a two-basis-point step down as the U.S. CPI shock reset global risk appetite. The episode is small in magnitude and large in instructional value. In live readings, it shows which variables move market-neutral yield, and which do not.

1. The Step Up: +0.02 Across All Four Assets

On October 14, the BASIS yield feed posted its periodic DRR update: stBTC 0.16% | stETH 0.18% | stSOL 0.18% | stPAXG 0.20% a step up of 0.02 across the board. The accompanying note attributed the move to three conditions: funding remaining positive on BTC, ETH, and SOL through the week; seven consecutive days of "Greed" sentiment; and SOL's roughly 10% weekly range widened further by Hong Kong's second spot SOL ETF launch expanding the spread surface available to execution. 2. The Step Down: CPI and the Reversal

Less than twenty-four hours later, the same feed returned to its pre-step levels: stBTC 0.14% | stETH 0.16% | stSOL 0.16% | stPAXG 0.18% (live read, basis.pro, Oct 15 UTC).

The trigger was macro, not crypto-native. September CPI printed 3.7% year-over-year, up from 3.4% in August; core CPI rose 2.6% against 2.4% prior. Odds of an October Fed hike spiked from roughly 22% to near 50% before settling at 26–30%. The ten-year Treasury yield approached levels last seen in 2002. Bitcoin fell about 3% toward $81,000; ether fell roughly 6.4% to near $2,350, with ETH futures liquidations ($286M) exceeding BTC's ($197M). U.S. spot BTC ETFs swung from a $175.7M inflow on October 13 to a $150.5M outflow on October 14. Equities transmitted the shock globally KOSPI fell nearly 8% and the Nikkei about 5% in the AI-led rout. (CoinDesk, Oct 15; CoinDesk liquidation report, Oct 15; Moneycontrol, Oct 15)

3. Why the Yield Layer Moved Only Two Basis Points

The asymmetry is the point. Spot prices moved 3–6% while the yield layer moved 0.02 percentage points because the two layers respond to different variable sets.

DRR is not a function of price direction. It is the daily output of a market-neutral execution engine whose inputs are funding differentials, spread width, and volatility regime. The October 14 conditions that lifted DRR positive funding, elevated sentiment, an expanding SOL range are exactly the inputs the engine converts into yield. The October 15 shock compressed part of that surface: funding cools when leveraged longs unwind, and risk-off conditions narrow the risk-taking spreads execution can capture, even as realized volatility spikes. The net effect on the yield surface was two basis points down, not a collapse and the arithmetic of the feed makes the distinction visible.

The annualization is unforgiving: APR = DRR × 365. A two-basis-point move in DRR is a 7.3-point move in annualized APR. That is why the same feed that read stBTC 0.16% (58.4% APR equivalent) on October 14 read stBTC 0.14% (51.1% APR) on October 15. The mechanism did not break; the inputs changed.

4. What the Cycle Demonstrates

First, yield is an outcome, not a product. Nothing in this week's readings was set by a rate decision; everything came from execution conditions that existed in the market on a given day.

Second, the "dynamic, not fixed" label is not a disclaimer it is the specification. In calm regimes, DRR compresses. In volatile regimes, the same inputs that stress directional portfolios expand the spread surface for neutral execution. This week compressed both directions in under 24 hours, with the causes published on the way up and the way down.

Third, disclosure is part of the infrastructure. A feed that publishes only step-ups is marketing; a feed that publishes both moves, with the drivers of each, is a research instrument. That is the standard the feed is built to.
